About the Course

Accurate documentation is the foundation of every professional investigation. Crime Scene Documentation: Photography & Sketching provides law enforcement personnel with the essential skills to properly record crime scenes, evidence, and individuals through systematic photography and detailed sketching. This course focuses on practical techniques that ensure your documentation supports successful investigations and courtroom testimony. Participants will learn how to photograph scenes methodically — capturing overall, mid-range, and close-up images — while applying proper lighting, composition, and the use of evidence markers and scales. Instruction also covers photographing different types of evidence and individuals, emphasizing consistency, accuracy, and integrity. In addition to photography, students will learn to create accurate sketches that complement photographic documentation and reinforce the visual record of a scene. By combining both techniques, investigators will be able to communicate key details clearly and effectively. Whether you are a new investigator, patrol officer, or crime scene technician, this course strengthens your ability to document scenes professionally and defensibly. Upon completion, participants will understand how to measure, photograph, and sketch crime scenes with confidence, ensuring every piece of evidence is properly recorded for analysis and presentation in court.
